Shilpi Begum Secures Bail Release

Shilpi Begum, widely identified as a youth women’s league figure, has been released on bail following her arrest in a case filed under the Explosives Act at Tejgaon Police Station.

She was discharged from Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail on Wednesday (22 April) at approximately 12:00 noon. Jail authorities confirmed the release after completion of all procedural formalities linked to the court order.

According to court sources, her bail was granted on Tuesday (21 April) evening by Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, where Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman approved her petition after hearing. Following the court’s directive, she remained in custody overnight before being formally released the next day.

Shilpi Begum was arrested late on Monday (20 April) from her residence located at Railway Colony Station Road in the Tejgaon area of Dhaka. Law enforcement officials stated that the arrest was made based on a tip-off in connection with the explosives-related case. After her arrest, she was produced before the court, which subsequently ordered her detention in jail.

Later that same night, she entered Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail accompanied by her one-and-a-half-month-old daughter, Kaifa Islam Simran. The presence of the infant during her initial incarceration drew attention due to its humanitarian dimension.

Upon her release, Shilpi Begum alleged that her arrest was the result of a “coordinated mob action,” claiming that police were initially unwilling to detain her and that individuals linked to political rivals had handed her over to law enforcement. She also stated that although she is associated with a political party, she does not hold any formal position within its organisational structure. She expressed gratitude towards the court and media following her release on bail.

Outside the jail premises, local labour leader Alamgir Hossain, who was present to receive her, described Shilpi Begum as a familiar figure in the area with long-standing political associations. He noted that differing opinions exist within the locality regarding the allegations against her, but emphasised that the bail decision should be viewed in the context of judicial discretion. He also expressed respect for the legal process and confidence in ongoing judicial proceedings.

Cases filed under the Explosives Act are generally treated as serious offences under Bangladeshi law, and bail is often considered subject to stringent judicial scrutiny. However, courts may grant bail depending on the circumstances of the case, available evidence, and humanitarian considerations.
