A disturbing incident in Jessore city’s Bejpara area has led to the arrest of a woman accused of murdering her mother-in-law and attempting to conceal the body inside a sack. Police detained Mariam Khatun in connection with the killing of Sakina Begum, the wife of Lal Chand Khalifa, late on Tuesday night.
According to law enforcement and local residents, the incident is believed to have stemmed from a seemingly trivial domestic dispute that escalated into extreme violence. Authorities say Sakina Begum was attacked with a sharp cutting instrument inside the family home, sustaining fatal injuries. She is reported to have died on the spot.
Following the killing, the accused allegedly attempted to hide the crime by placing the victim’s body inside a sack and leaving it concealed near the front of the residence. The concealment effort was discovered within hours, leading to the involvement of police.
The sequence of events began earlier in the day when the victim’s son, Shahidul Islam, left for work in the morning. He later noted that no food had been prepared at home. Throughout the day, when he enquired about his mother’s whereabouts, he was told that she had gone out. However, upon returning home at night and receiving the same explanation again, he became suspicious and informed the local police station.
Shortly after midnight, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Shahidul Islam and his sister Shahida Begum reportedly discovered a sack placed near the front of the house. Upon opening it, they identified the body of their mother. Police were immediately alerted and arrived at the scene to recover the body and collect forensic evidence. The suspected weapon, described as a blood-stained sharp blade, was also seized from the accused.
