Farmer Dies in Fuel Queue Incident

A 50-year-old farmer has tragically died after collapsing while waiting in a queue at a fuel station in Khanasama upazila of Dinajpur district, northern Bangladesh. The incident occurred on Monday around 5:00 pm at the Omar Faruq Filling Station, located near Chowrangi Bazar, according to local sources and eyewitness accounts.

The deceased, Masud Rana, was a resident of the Darowani area under Sonaray Union in Nilphamari Sadar upazila. He was the son of Mofiz Uddin and was primarily engaged in agriculture, earning his livelihood through farming activities, as confirmed by his family and neighbours.

Eyewitnesses reported that a fuel tanker had arrived at the filling station around 4:30 pm, prompting a large influx of motorcyclists seeking petrol. As a result, more than two hundred motorcycles were reportedly lined up, creating a dense and prolonged queue under hot and crowded conditions. Many of those present described the situation as highly congested, with limited movement and rising discomfort due to the heat.

Masud Rana was reportedly waiting near the entrance of the fuel station rather than standing in the designated queue. Suddenly, he began feeling unwell and collapsed on the ground. Several bystanders quickly rushed to his aid and transported him in a van to the Khanasama Upazila Health Complex in Pakherhat. However, attending physicians confirmed that he had either died on arrival or shortly before reaching the hospital.

Medical officials stated that the exact cause of death could not be immediately determined. However, initial indications suggest that the collapse may have been triggered by a sudden medical complication, possibly related to cardiac arrest or heat-induced stress. A definitive cause will require a post-mortem examination.

Police from Khanasama Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after being informed of the incident. Authorities stated that the death is being treated as natural, and no complaints have been filed by the family. The body was later handed over to relatives for burial arrangements.

The incident has cast a pall of sorrow over the local community, sparking renewed concern about safety conditions at fuel stations, particularly during peak demand. Residents have emphasised the risks associated with prolonged waiting times in crowded and overheated environments, calling for improved queue management and stronger safety measures at petrol stations.
