Faridpur Trader Attacked, Robbed

A 55-year-old businessman has been seriously injured in a violent attack by a group of assailants in Boalmari upazila of Faridpur, central Bangladesh. The attackers also stole more than three lakh taka in cash, according to police and family sources.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning (28 April) in the Shekhar Dolvita area under Shekhar Union of Boalmari upazila.

The victim, Md. Gaus Molla, a resident of Raibor village and son of the late Md. Bashar Molla, works as an onion trader. He regularly travels to Sahasrail market on market days to buy and sell onions and maintains a business presence there.

According to accounts provided by family members and police, Mr Molla left home at approximately 4:00 am on a motorcycle, heading towards Sahasrail market. While passing through the Dolvita area, his route was reportedly blocked by a group of unidentified attackers who had been lying in wait.

The assailants first struck him repeatedly with sharp weapons, leaving him severely injured and throwing him off his motorcycle. They then continued the assault using hammers, targeting both of his legs. Medical reports confirm fractures below the knees on both legs, along with multiple injuries caused by sharp objects on different parts of his body.

After incapacitating him, the attackers took the cash he was carrying, which had been withdrawn from a bank the previous day and combined with additional funds for purchasing onions. The total amount stolen was over three lakh taka.

Following the attack, the perpetrators fled the scene, leaving the motorcycle behind in a nearby ditch.

Locals rescued the injured trader and initially took him to Boalmari Upazila Health Complex. Due to the severity of his condition, doctors referred him to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where he was admitted to the trauma centre. He is currently undergoing treatment there.

His cousin, Sajal Molla, stated that the attack appeared to be premeditated and that the money had been arranged specifically for business purposes.

Police confirmed that they responded promptly after being informed of the incident and recovered the victim’s motorcycle from the area. Authorities said the case is being treated as a robbery and investigation is ongoing. A formal case will be registered once a complaint is filed.
