The body of Bangladeshi student Jamal Ahmed Limon, aged 27, who was killed in Florida, United States, has been brought back to his ancestral home in Madariganj upazila of Jamalpur district.
On Monday at around 3:30 pm, the ambulance carrying his remains arrived at Mahishbathān village under Koirchara Union. As the vehicle entered the village, relatives and local residents gathered around it, creating a solemn atmosphere. The body was later taken to the family residence.
Earlier the same day, at 8:47 am, the flight carrying Limon’s remains landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. Following formal procedures at the airport, the body was transported by road at around 10:00 am towards Jamalpur. According to the family’s plan, the funeral prayer (janaza) is scheduled to be held after Maghrib prayers in the evening, followed by burial in the family graveyard at the homestead.
Upon arrival in the village, large numbers of people gathered as the ambulance entered the area. Residents and relatives attempted to view the coffin, leading to a dense crowd at the family courtyard. Family members became distressed, and Limon’s father, Juharul Haque, collapsed emotionally and was later seated on a chair by relatives.
His uncle, Helal Uddin, stated that the family is struggling to accept the return of Limon’s body and demanded capital punishment for those responsible for the killing.
Background of the deceased
Jamal Ahmed Limon, also known as Limon, was the elder son of Juharul Haque of Mahishbathān village in Koirchara Union, Madariganj upazila. His father had been residing for a long period in Mowna area of Gazipur due to work, where Limon was raised and educated. He had one younger brother, Zobayer Hossain.
Limon was pursuing a PhD at the University of South Florida in the United States, specialising in geography, environmental science and policy.

Investigation details
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, Limon’s roommate, US citizen Hisam Abu Gharbeh, was arrested from his family residence on suspicion of involvement in the killing. Following interrogation, authorities recovered Limon’s mutilated body on 24 April from several black garbage bags found near the Howard Frankland Bridge area in Florida.
Limon was reported missing on 16 April along with another individual, Nahida Sultana Brishti. A friend of theirs had informed the university authorities after their disappearance.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
