Afzal Naser Gets Three-Day Remand

A court in Dhaka has granted a three-day remand for former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) Director Lieutenant Colonel (dismissed) Md Afzal Naser in a case related to an attempted murder during the July mass uprising period.

The order was issued on Tuesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaed in connection with a case filed at Kotwali Police Station. State Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed the development.

According to court proceedings, Afzal Naser was produced before the court on the day and an application was submitted to show him arrested in the case. The application was filed by the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector KM Abdul Haque. Subsequently, the investigation officer also submitted a separate petition seeking a seven-day remand for interrogation.

After hearing both the prosecution and the defence, the court granted a three-day remand instead of the seven days sought by the prosecution.

The prosecution’s arguments in favour of remand were presented by State Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman. On the other hand, Afzal Naser’s lawyer, Zahirul Hasan, opposed the remand plea and applied for bail on behalf of his client.

Afzal Naser was arrested earlier on 30 March from the Mirpur DOHS area of Dhaka. Since his arrest, he has been placed on remand in multiple cases on several occasions. The present order marks his latest remand in connection with the Kotwali Police Station attempted murder case.

The case stems from an incident during the July 2024 anti-discrimination student movement. According to the remand application, on 16 July 2024, students of Jagannath University brought out a procession as part of the movement. It is alleged that during the march, attackers affiliated with the Awami League (currently banned from political activities) and its associate organisations assaulted the demonstrators in the Court House Street area.

During the incident, Jagannath University student Anik Kumar Das sustained serious gunshot injuries. He was later treated at hospital and recovered. Following the incident, Anik Kumar Das filed a case with Kotwali Police Station on 21 November 2024.

The investigation report submitted to the court states that preliminary findings indicate Afzal Naser’s involvement in the incident. The investigating officer argued that custodial interrogation was necessary to ensure a proper and thorough investigation into the allegations.
