Measles Surge Claims Six Children

The number of measles infections and related fatalities has been rising alarmingly across the country, prompting renewed concern among public health authorities. According to the latest report from the Directorate General of Health Services, six children died within the last 24 hours due to measles and its complications.

Of the reported deaths, two children were confirmed to have died directly from measles infection in Dhaka. The remaining four deaths, attributed to measles-related complications, were recorded in Khulna and Rajshahi, with two fatalities in each division. Health officials also confirmed that 1,186 new cases presenting measles symptoms were identified nationwide during the same 24-hour period, indicating a continuing upward trend in transmission.

Since 15 March this year, the situation has become increasingly serious. A total of 263 children have died with measles-like symptoms, while 54 deaths have been confirmed as directly caused by measles infection. During this period, 42,979 children have shown symptoms consistent with the disease. Of them, 29,831 required hospital admission and received medical care, while 26,368 have since recovered and returned home. Laboratory testing has confirmed 5,726 cases of measles infection.

Health experts warn that the current pattern of spread highlights significant gaps in routine immunisation coverage and underscores the urgent need to strengthen vaccination programmes nationwide. Measles, a highly contagious viral disease, spreads rapidly through respiratory droplets and poses a serious risk to children, particularly those with weakened immune systems or incomplete vaccination histories.

The illness typically presents with high fever, cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes, and a distinctive rash. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, encephalitis, and in some cases, death. Medical professionals stress that early detection and prompt supportive care are essential in reducing mortality.

In response to the growing caseload, health authorities have called for enhanced preparedness in hospitals, improved surveillance, and wider public awareness campaigns. Parents and guardians are being strongly urged to ensure that children receive all recommended doses of the measles vaccine on schedule.

Officials caution that without accelerated vaccination coverage and stronger community-level awareness, the outbreak may continue to expand. Strengthening immunisation efforts remains the most effective tool to curb further spread and protect vulnerable children.
