A 21-year-old housewife, Hasina Khatun, died after consuming pesticide while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday night. Following her death, members of her husband’s family allegedly left the hospital, and her relatives have reported that jewellery was removed from her body before they fled.
According to family members, Hasina was two months pregnant at the time of her death. She had initially been taken to Upazila (Premtoli) Health Complex after ingesting pesticide on Monday night, before being transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital as her condition deteriorated. She died while receiving treatment at the hospital on Tuesday night.
Relatives stated that at the hospital, Hasina was accompanied by her husband, Md Ratul, her sister Laila Khatun, and two friends of her husband. After her death, it is alleged that ornaments were taken from her body. Subsequently, her husband and the others present reportedly left the hospital.
Hasina was the daughter of Hasan Ali from Andardighi village in Sapahar upazila of Naogaon district. Her husband, Md Ratul, is from Rajabari Mollapara village under Godagari upazila in Rajshahi, and his father is Md Chobi. The couple had been married for approximately seven months.
A cousin of the deceased, Robiul Islam, claimed that Ratul was involved in drug dealing and also used narcotics. He further alleged that following the marriage, Ratul had pressured Hasina to bring Tk 100,000 from her parental home as dowry, which he intended to use for a Phensedyl-related trade. According to the family, Hasina did not meet this demand and was subjected to repeated physical and mental abuse as a result.
On Monday night, Hasina reportedly consumed pesticide at her in-laws’ residence. She was first admitted to a local health facility and later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, she died during the night.
Following the incident, Godagari Police Station confirmed that Hasina’s sister, Meherunnesa, filed a written complaint on Wednesday. Authorities stated that a case is being processed on charges related to instigating suicide. Police also confirmed that Hasina’s husband and other members of her in-laws’ family have been absconding since her death. The body has been kept in the hospital morgue, and a post-mortem examination is scheduled. After the autopsy, the body is expected to be handed over to her parental family.
