A fresh escalation in the Russia–Ukraine war has been reported just hours before a unilateral ceasefire declared by Moscow, with Ukrainian drone attacks injuring at least 13 people, including a child, in Russia’s border region of Bryansk.
According to regional governor Alexander Bogomaz, the overnight strike hit the Bezhitsky district of Bryansk city, causing significant damage to civilian infrastructure. Two residential apartment blocks were impacted, leaving more than 20 flats damaged and nearly 40 vehicles destroyed or severely affected.
The timing of the attack is particularly sensitive, coming immediately ahead of Russia’s self-declared ceasefire for 8–9 May, announced by President Vladimir Putin to coincide with Victory Day commemorations marking the end of the Second World War in Europe.
While Moscow framed the pause in hostilities as a temporary humanitarian and symbolic gesture, Kyiv has remained sceptical. Ukrainian officials previously proposed a ceasefire beginning on 6 May, but claim the initiative was rejected by the Russian side.
In parallel developments, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that Russian air defence systems intercepted and destroyed at least three drones targeting the capital. No casualties were reported in that incident, though security measures across Moscow have been tightened.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has also reported continued Russian strikes. In the Dnipro region, local authorities confirmed that one person was injured following a separate attack attributed to Russian forces.
Tensions have further escalated diplomatically. Russian authorities issued warnings to foreign diplomats stationed in Kyiv, stating that any disruption or attack during Victory Day events could trigger what they described as “retaliatory strikes” against the Ukrainian capital.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Moscow of repeatedly rejecting efforts to halt the fighting, arguing that Russia is undermining international attempts to reduce civilian casualties and establish even a temporary truce.
