Three Sentenced to Death for Student’s Rape and Murder

The Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal has delivered a landmark verdict in a case involving the gang rape and subsequent murder of a schoolgirl. On Thursday, Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim passed the death sentence upon three individuals found guilty of the crime, while also ruling on two other unrelated cases involving crimes against minors in the district.

The Gang Rape and Murder Case

The conviction stems from an incident that occurred on the night of 19 April 2024, in Shildah village, situated within the Islampur Upazila of Jamalpur. According to court records, the victim, a local schoolgirl, was subjected to a brutal gang rape before being murdered. Following the incident, a formal case was registered at Islampur Police Station on 5 May 2024.

Public Prosecutor (PP) Fazlul Haque confirmed that the prosecution presented nine witnesses during the trial. Upon evaluating the evidence and testimonies, the court found three men guilty of the primary charges. Each of the condemned men was also ordered to pay a fine of 200,000 BDT. A fourth individual, identified as Sadiq, was acquitted of all charges as his involvement could not be established.

Additional Judgments in Juvenile Protection Cases

In addition to the murder trial, the same tribunal presided over two other significant cases involving violence against children in different parts of the district.

Abduction Case in Jamalpur Sadar:

The court heard the case of a teenage girl abducted in the Banshchara area of Jamalpur Sadar. The accused, Mahbubul Alam Rabbi, was found guilty of the kidnapping. Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim sentenced Rabbi to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of 200,000 BDT.

Rape Case in Dewanganj:

A third ruling was delivered concerning the rape of a young girl in Vitakandi village, under the Dewanganj Upazila. The defendant, Hridoy Mia, was present in court as the judge sentenced him to 10 years of detention.

Judicial Conclusion

The verdicts were delivered in the presence of the accused parties under heightened security. These rulings reflect the judiciary’s application of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, which mandates stringent penalties for heinous crimes against minors. The Public Prosecutor noted that the timely deposition of the nine witnesses was instrumental in securing the capital punishment for the Islampur case, marking a significant conclusion to a legal process that began approximately two years ago.
