A night-time assault on a businessman’s home in Gazipur’s Kaliganj upazila has resulted in the murder of a homemaker and left two family members fighting for their lives. The incident occurred around 3:00 AM on Saturday, 15 August, in the Nagarvella Gayenbari area of Nagari Union, spreading shock and anger across the district.

Taking advantage of heavy overnight rain, a gang of 10 to 12 men with their faces concealed by towels (gamcha) entered the neighbourhood. Before breaching the target house, the assailants intimidated nearby residents, threatening to shoot anyone who stepped outside. The intruders eventually entered the residence of 41-year-old rod and cement merchant Monjur Miah by breaking a toilet ventilator.

Once inside, the gang launched a brutal attack with sharp weapons, including machetes and knives, targeting Monjur Miah, his 35-year-old wife Kamrun Nahar, and their 16-year-old daughter Sanjida Akter Mim. Hearing distress cries, neighbours attempted to intervene, but the gang hurled bricks and threatened to open fire. As the crowd outside expanded, the perpetrators retreated into the darkness.

Local residents and relatives transported the victims to a nearby hospital, where attending doctors pronounced Kamrun Nahar dead. Monjur Miah and his daughter were transferred to specialized medical facilities in Dhaka in critical condition, with Monjur currently receiving care in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Eyewitness accounts and family statements provide further context to the tragedy:

• Asma Begum, Sister-in-law: Learned of the break-in around 3:00 AM, after which her husband and son rushed to the residence to transport the wounded family members to hospital.

• Nasir Bepari, Uncle: Inspected the commotion with a torch, only to be threatened with gunfire by an assailant. He sustained a leg injury from a thrown brick before the gang fled.

• Mohon Miah, Brother: Arrived to find his family severely injured. He disclosed that Monjur had arranged to withdraw Tk 20 lakh from a co-operative society for a land purchase, suggesting word of the financial transaction may have reached the attackers.

Investigative teams from the Gazipur District Police, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Detective Branch (DB), and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have inspected the scene to collect forensic evidence.

Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Zakir Hossain confirmed that Kamrun Nahar’s body was sent to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Asaduzzaman noted that while no stolen cash or property has been reported yet, specialized law enforcement units are conducting targeted operations to trace and arrest the perpetrators.
