Blackmail Case Targets Woman Entrepreneur

A disturbing case has emerged from Chandina in Cumilla, where a female entrepreneur has allegedly been subjected to sexual harassment, forced recording, and subsequent blackmail using a mobile phone video. Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the incident following a swift operation.

The arrests were made in the early hours of Friday near the Mahichail Government Hospital area of the upazila. The accused have been identified as 28-year-old Md. Rubel, a driver and son of Delwar Hossain, and 40-year-old Md. Jamal, son of the late Ismail Hossain. Both are residents of the Mahichail Bazar vicinity.

According to the victim, she has been running a beauty parlour in Mahichail Bazar after acquiring professional training with the aim of becoming financially independent. She stated that the two men had been harassing her for several days, repeatedly making indecent proposals. Upon her refusal, they allegedly escalated their intimidation by threatening to fabricate obscene content involving her identity using digital manipulation techniques and circulate it on social media unless she complied with their demands.

The situation intensified on Thursday afternoon when, according to her complaint, the accused forcibly entered her parlour. There, they allegedly subjected her to physical harassment and recorded the incident on a mobile phone. The victim further claims that she was then threatened with the release of the footage unless she paid a sum of three lakh taka as extortion.

Traumatised by the incident, she contacted the national emergency helpline 999, prompting immediate police intervention. Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, rescued her, and later launched an operation leading to the arrest of the two suspects.

The Officer-in-Charge of Chandina Police Station, Atiqur Rahman, confirmed that a written complaint had been lodged by the victim. He further stated that the accused have been detained under charges relating to pornography production and preservation, intimidation with intent to defame, and sexual harassment. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether additional individuals were involved in the crime.
