A 23-year-old man from Ramgati in Lakshmipur district has been reported dead by suicide, with initial claims linking the incident to marital discord later overshadowed by emerging details of deep-rooted family conflict and property disputes.
The deceased, Mohammad Anwar Hossain, son of the late Jabirul Doctor, was found dead in the early hours of Wednesday (6 May) in the Sufirhat area under Char Algi Union. He lived with his mother, two sisters, and his pregnant wife.
Although early narratives suggested that Anwar took his own life due to alleged marital pressures and his wife’s demands, a more complex picture has since emerged following local inquiries. Family members and neighbours indicate that prolonged tensions over ancestral land transactions between Anwar and his two sisters, Nazma and Sharmin Akter, played a significant role in escalating his psychological distress.
According to relatives, the dispute centred on the alleged sale of family property. It is claimed that the sisters received a substantial sum from Anwar under the pretext of transferring land ownership but repeatedly delayed formal registration. The situation deteriorated further during an argument on 1 May, when the mother reportedly sided with her daughters. In a moment of anger, Anwar is said to have assaulted his mother, an act that left him deeply remorseful thereafter.
Family members, including his cousin Sultan Hossain Ripon, stated that Anwar was consumed by guilt following the incident. He was repeatedly heard expressing regret, particularly over having raised his hand against his mother, which he regarded as an unforgivable act. This emotional burden, combined with ongoing family disputes, is believed to have contributed to his deteriorating mental state.
However, conflicting accounts have also been presented. His sister Sharmin Akter alleged that Anwar’s wife, Yasmin Akter, had taken money when returning to her parental home and that subsequent demands and conditions imposed by her family added further strain. She claimed that Anwar faced humiliation during an attempt to bring his wife back home.
Yasmin Akter, who is pregnant, has rejected these allegations. She asserted that the primary source of tension was the prolonged dispute over land and money involving her sisters-in-law, adding that she herself was subjected to physical assault during the family altercation before returning to her parental home.
Local political figures noted that mediation efforts had been planned but were not completed before the incident occurred.
