A violent clash between two rival groups over establishing local dominance in Bhairab upazila left at least 15 people injured on Friday afternoon, according to local sources. The incident took place in Bhabanipur village under Shreenagar Union, turning a longstanding neighbourhood rivalry into hours of chaotic confrontation.
Witnesses reported that tensions between two factions of the Moydar Munshi household and the Bodhur group had been simmering for an extended period. The situation escalated suddenly following an altercation involving Farhad from the Moydar Munshi side and Masum from the same household. What began as a verbal dispute quickly spiralled out of control as both sides mobilised local supporters.
Armed with sticks and other crude weapons, members from both groups engaged in a violent confrontation that reportedly lasted for around an hour. Residents described scenes of panic as the clash spread through parts of the village, forcing many locals to retreat indoors for safety.
Injured individuals
The injured were taken to Bhairab Upazila Health Complex and several private clinics for treatment. Their conditions were described as stable in most cases, though some sustained more serious injuries.

Local Union Parishad member Meraz Mia alleged that supporters of the Bodhur faction initiated the attack using locally available weapons, claiming that more than ten people from his side were injured in the confrontation.
However, Badsha Mia, representing the Bodhur group, presented a different version of events. He claimed that Masum Mia had recently aligned with their group, and that this shift angered Meraz Mia and Farhad, who allegedly assaulted him first. This, he argued, triggered the wider clash between the two sides.
Police from Bhairab Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after receiving reports of the violence and managed to bring the situation under control. Inspector (Investigation) Limon Bose confirmed that the confrontation involved members of the same extended locality and stemmed from internal disputes over influence and allegiance.
He added that legal action would be taken once a written complaint is formally lodged and the circumstances are properly investigated.
The incident has once again highlighted the recurring problem of local power struggles in rural areas, where personal rivalries and group loyalty often escalate into open violence, disrupting community life and public safety.
