A gas leakage–triggered explosion in a residential flat in Narayanganj has left five members of the same family, including three children, with severe burn injuries. The incident occurred early on Sunday in the Fatulla area of Narayanganj Sadar Upazila.
The explosion took place in a ground-floor western-side flat of an eight-storey building owned by Shahjahan Mia in the Uttor Bhuiyan Giridhara area, Road No. 6. Preliminary accounts indicate that gas had accumulated inside the kitchen due to leakage in the pipeline before ignition occurred.
The injured are Md Kalam (35), a vegetable vendor; his wife Sayma (32); their son Munna (7); and daughters Munni (10) and Kotha (7). The family originates from Barukdia village in Baufal Upazila of Patuakhali district.
All five were initially taken to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in critical condition, where they remain under emergency treatment.
A summary of the victims’ injuries is provided below:
| Name | Age | Relationship | Burn Injury (%) | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Md Kalam | 35 | Father | 95% | Critical |
| Sayma | 32 | Mother | 60% | Critical |
| Munna | 7 | Son | 30% | Serious |

Eyewitnesses and fire service personnel stated that the blast occurred after gas had leaked into the enclosed kitchen area during the early hours. Residents reported a sudden loud explosion, followed by fire spreading within the room. Windows shattered and parts of the building’s boundary wall were also damaged due to the force of the blast.
Locals rushed to the scene immediately after hearing the explosion and rescued the injured before transporting them to hospital.
Md Sayma was quoted by rescuers as saying that the family had been asleep at the time of the incident and had no prior indication of danger. Md Kalam reportedly stated that the explosion occurred immediately after he attempted to light the kitchen stove.
According to Abdullah Al Arifin, Deputy Assistant Director of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence in Narayanganj, the explosion was caused by gas accumulation resulting from a pipeline leak inside the kitchen.
He noted that initial findings suggest ignition may have occurred when a lighter or stove was used, triggering the blast.
Fire service teams confirmed that the concentration of leaked gas inside the enclosed space was sufficient to cause an explosion upon ignition. The incident has been recorded as a gas-related domestic explosion, and further assessment of the building’s internal gas infrastructure may follow as part of routine investigation procedures.
The injured remain under intensive medical care as of the latest update.
