A former Union Parishad (UP) member from Narsingdi’s Raipur area has been brutally murdered, with his body discovered floating in a river. On Thursday morning, local residents in the Dharavanga area of MP Tila, Nabiganj, Brahmanbaria, spotted the body and immediately alerted the authorities, who subsequently recovered it.
The deceased has been identified as Amir Hossain (45), a former UP member of Ward No. 3 of Banshgari Union Parishad. Police sources confirmed that Hossain faced five separate criminal cases at Raipur Police Station, although it remains unclear who carried out the attack or what the motive was. Family members suspect that the killing could be linked to territorial disputes in the riverine Banshgari area or longstanding personal rivalries.
Sub-Inspector Sunil Chandra Sutradhar, in charge of the Salimganj Police Camp, reported that the body bore multiple injuries, including four distinct blows to the head and several wounds on both legs, indicating a violent assault.
According to Hossain’s relatives, he was travelling by boat from Banshgari to his ancestral home in neighbouring Chormodhua on the night before his body was found. During the journey, a group of assailants forced him onto another boat, where he was beaten and hacked to death before being dumped into the river. Locals later discovered the body drifting in the Dharavanga area of Salimganj and pulled it ashore, after which police were notified and recovered the body for further investigation.
Hossain’s elder brother, Bakul Mia, stated, “We do not know who could commit such a heinous act. We have heard that he was taken from the boat on his way to Chormodhua. We demand justice for his murder.”
Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam of Nabiganj Police Station added, “It appears the body was disposed of in the river and carried downstream to our jurisdiction. Several acquaintances have identified the deceased. Arrangements are underway to send the body to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.”
