A young married woman was found hanging at a residence in Anwara upazila of Chattogram, prompting police to launch an investigation after her family alleged that she may have been murdered.
The deceased has been identified as 21-year-old Halima Akter, daughter of Mohammad Ishaq from Ward No. 4 of Raipur Union in the same upazila. Police recovered her body from a room in the house of Kalur Majhi in the West Boraia village under Bototoli Union around 11:00am on Sunday.
Halima had been married to Mizanur Rahman on 25 October 2023. The couple have a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter named Mishkatul Jannat. According to family members, the marital relationship had been troubled for some time, with frequent disputes and tensions between the couple. Local mediation attempts were reportedly made by both families to ease the situation, but conflicts persisted.
Relatives stated that a final altercation between the couple took place late on Saturday night. Early the next morning, Halima was found dead under circumstances that have raised serious concerns among her family.
Her elder brother, Naeem Uddin, alleged that they were informed of the incident early in the morning by her husband. “At around 6:30am, my brother-in-law called our father and said Halima had taken her own life by hanging. However, when we arrived, we saw her body suspended from the ceiling of the bedroom, with her feet touching the ground. We suspect she was killed and later staged to look like a suicide,” he said.
Following the discovery, members of the deceased’s in-laws reportedly left the house and have not yet been traced.
Police from Anwara Police Station arrived at the scene and recovered the body, which has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. Authorities have stated that the exact cause of death will be confirmed once the autopsy report is available.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Junayet Chowdhury said the matter is being taken seriously and is under active investigation. He added that preliminary information suggests there had been a quarrel between the husband and wife on Saturday night, but all aspects of the case will be thoroughly examined before drawing conclusions.
