United Commercial Bank PLC (UCB) has updated its digital banking infrastructure to allow cardless cash withdrawals across its nationwide network of automated teller machines (ATMs). This new facility, deployed through the bank’s smartphone application, “UCB One”, removes the necessity for consumers to carry physical debit or credit cards. According to a corporate media release, this service has been engineered to ensure that account holders can access funds during unforeseen situations when physical cards are misplaced or unavailable.
Technical Protocols and Transaction Security
The underlying architecture governing the cardless transaction process relies on a “Cash by Code” validation mechanism. When a user requests cash via the smartphone interface, the application generates a secure, encrypted digital token. This code is then entered directly into a UCB ATM to verify the transaction and dispense the banknotes.
To support this digital transition, the financial institution has embedded multi-layered defensive protocols within the application. These measures include biometric verification and advanced encryption standards to eliminate unauthorized access. Mohammad Golam Yeazdani, the Head of Digital Banking and Transformation at UCB, stated that the system was developed to streamline daily transactions while maintaining strict digital security controls, thereby providing a risk-free and user-friendly experience for the public.
Functional Spectrum of the UCB One Application
| Service Division | Specific Technical Capabilities |
| Cash Logistics | Cardless ATM withdrawals utilizing secure “Cash by Code” generation |
| Onboarding | Immediate digital account creation without physical branch visits |
| Payment Gateways | Settlement of utility bills and retail transactions across various commercial brands |
| MFS Interoperability | Streamlined transfers to Mobile Financial Services with automated name validation |
| Lifestyle Modules | Integrated platforms for digital food ordering and travel ticket reservations |
Consumer Adoption and Auxiliary Features
Statistical indicators from UCB demonstrate rapid user adoption, which the bank attributes to the application’s role as a consolidated platform for financial and lifestyle management. By unifying multiple routine transactions into a single interface, the bank has successfully minimized operational steps for its clientele.
A notable technical feature within the upgraded system is its secure connection to Mobile Financial Services (MFS). When a consumer enters a recipient’s mobile number for a fund transfer, the UCB One system automatically retrieves and displays the registered account name. This validation process serves as a critical accounting control, preventing financial loss by allowing the sender to verify the recipient’s identity before final transaction authorization.
