Two children have died after drowning in a pond in Sherpur’s Sreebordi upazila, according to police and local sources. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in the village of Purba Bade Ghona Para under Goshaipur Union.
The deceased have been identified as Hanzala (9), son of Alamgir Hossain, and Siddiq Mia (6), son of Nekabar Ali. Both children were residents of the same village, Purba Bade Ghona Para.
Police and local residents stated that the incident took place while the two children were playing in a nearby pond using a makeshift raft made from banana plants. At some point during the play, they are believed to have fallen into the water accidentally. Following the incident, the children did not return home for an extended period, prompting concern among family members.
Family members subsequently began searching for them in the surrounding areas after their absence was noticed. Local residents joined the search effort. Later, with the assistance of villagers, the bodies of the two children were recovered from the pond.
The matter was confirmed by Mohammad Nurul Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Sreebordi Police Station. He stated that the bodies were handed over to the families on the same afternoon following completion of necessary formalities. A case of unnatural death has been registered in connection with the incident.
