Bangladesh Police have uncovered an illegal domestic distillery during a raid on a residential property in the Phulbari upazila of Kurigram district. A substantial volume of locally produced liquor, commonly known as “Bangla মদ” (Bangla Mod), alongside raw materials and manufacturing equipment, was seized during the operation.

The raid was conducted at approximately 16:30 BST on Monday, 22 June, in the Kishamat Shimulbari Jhaukuti area, located within the Naodanga union of Phulbari upazila. Acting on credible intelligence regarding the illicit manufacture of alcohol, a police detachment targeted the residence of a local individual identified as Habibar Rahman.
Local sources and law enforcement officials confirmed that the premises had been utilized for the clandestine production of local liquor for an extended period.
Law enforcement personnel detained one individual at the scene, identified as 45-year-old Ganai Chandra, who is allegedly linked to the distillery’s operations. The principal suspect and alleged operator of the illegal brewery, Abdul Kader, managed to evade capture and fled the scene after detecting the arrival of the police.
Following the conclusion of the raid, the homeowner, Habibar Rahman, was taken into police custody for formal questioning to determine his level of involvement or awareness regarding the illegal activities conducted on his property.

Mahmud Hasan Naim, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Phulbari Police Station, verified the details of the raid. He stated that the operation was executed based on a secret tip-off, resulting in the confiscation of a large quantity of locally brewed spirits and various apparatus used in the distillation process.
The Officer-in-Charge confirmed the detention of Ganai Chandra from the site and the extraction of the homeowner for interrogation. He further noted that whilst the primary suspect remains at large, law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing leads to ensure his swift apprehension.
The police department has initiated the necessary legal protocols, and formal charges are currently being processed in connection with the incident.
