US Signals Intent to Host 2038 FIFA World Cup

The United States has emerged as the primary driving force behind the ongoing FIFA World Cup, overshadowing co-hosts Mexico and Canada by staging 78 of the tournament’s 104 matches. Whilst the sporting spectacle continues to unfold on the pitch, the event has not been without significant off-field controversies. Public discourse has been dominated by daily grievances regarding exorbitant ticket prices and stringent visa issuance policies.

Despite these immediate challenges, Washington is already looking toward the future. Before the current tournament has even concluded, senior American officials have dropped strong hints regarding plans to secure another World Cup within the next decade. Andrew Giuliano, the Executive Director of the White House World Cup Task Force, has indicated that the United States is planning a solo bid to host the 2038 edition of the tournament.

Expanding Formats and Infrastructure Capacity

The current tournament marks a historic shift, with the roster of participating teams expanding from 32 to 48. However, football’s global governing body, FIFA, is already contemplating a further expansion to a 64-team format by 2030. Speaking to the BBC, Giuliano asserted that no country is better positioned than the United States to accommodate such a massive logistical undertaking. He emphasised that even if the tournament expands to 64 teams in the future, the US possesses the unmatched capability to manage it successfully.

Whilst stopping short of a formal declaration, Giuliano made the administration’s long-term ambitions entirely clear. “Before we generate too much excitement over a 2038 bid, our immediate priority remains ensuring the current World Cup concludes seamlessly,” he noted.

The bidding process for 2038 represents the next open frontier for prospective host nations. The venues for the upcoming editions have already been locked in by FIFA. The 2030 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with three centenary celebratory matches scheduled in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has secured the exclusive hosting rights for the 2034 tournament, making 2038 the next available slot for a fresh bidding cycle.

Geopolitical Friction and Commercial Interests

The sporting event is unfolding against a backdrop of geopolitical tension and logistical criticism aimed at FIFA. In April, strict immigration policies enacted by the Trump administration resulted in travel warnings affecting players, journalists, and spectators from more than 120 nations. Compounding these travel hurdles, fans have expressed outrage over skyrocketing transport and accommodation costs across American host cities.

Geopolitical realities have also spilt onto the pitch, particularly regarding ongoing tensions between the US and Iran in the Middle East. Due to diplomatic restrictions, the Iranian national team faces a highly unusual scheduling regime. They are required to fly back to Mexico immediately after playing their matches in the US, as they have been barred from staying in American territory before or after their fixtures.

Nonetheless, the immense commercial potential of the American market makes a 2038 return highly lucrative for FIFA. Recognising this economic reality, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has already relocated the organisation’s legal department from its traditional home in Zurich, Switzerland, to Florida.

Defending the current hosting environment, Giuliano argued that social media sentiment and feedback from visiting fans demonstrate the warmth and hospitality of the American public. He also highlighted the economic efficiency of utilising existing US infrastructure. “Our stadiums and transport networks were already fully developed,” Giuliano stated. “Where other nations are forced to expend tens of billions of dollars constructing new facilities, our expenditure has been contained to just a few billion.”
