A furniture businessman has been arrested by the police in the northern Bangladeshi city of Bogura following allegations of brutally assaulting and stabbing a stray dog. The incident, which has sparked outrage amongst local residents and animal welfare advocates, highlights growing public concern over domestic animal cruelty and the enforcement of protective legislation within the region.
The suspect, identified as Mo. Swapan, a resident of the Rahmannagar area, operates a local furniture business. Law enforcement officials apprehended Swapan at around midnight on Monday during a targeted raid in the city’s Bokshibazar area. The arrest followed a formal criminal complaint lodged at the Bogura Sadar Police Station by Mo. Emran Hossain, a convener member of the Bogura branch of the Bangladesh Animal Welfare Association (BAWA).
According to the police report, the incident came to light on Monday afternoon when Hossain received a distress call regarding an injured animal. He rushed to an alleyway situated on the western side of the Independent Hospital in the Kanchgari neighbourhood. Upon arrival, he discovered a black-and-white stray dog lying helpless inside a drainage ditch, suffering from severe, deep lacerations inflicted by a sharp weapon.
Recognising the urgency of the situation, Hossain, alongside two local residents, S.M. Sadikul Islam and Rafid Yasad, coordinated a rescue operation. The team managed to extricate the heavily bleeding animal from the ditch and transported it to a specialised veterinary care centre in the Jaleswaritana area.
The severity of the injuries required immediate surgical intervention. A coordinated medical team, comprising officials from the Upazila Livestock Department and the District Livestock Department, was assembled to provide emergency treatment.
Veterinary surgeons performed a critical operation to stabilise the animal and halt the blood loss. Following the surgery and subsequent post-operative care, officials confirmed that the dog’s physical condition had stabilised and was showing signs of steady improvement.
Witness accounts collected from the neighbourhood indicate that Swapan deliberately targeted the stray dog, attacking it with a sharp object without provocation. The complainant, Hossain, noted that the minor delay in filing the official police case was due to the immediate priority of securing lifesaving veterinary treatment for the animal and consulting with BAWA’s central leadership regarding legal procedures.
Iqbal Bahar, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the District Detective Branch (DB) Police, confirmed the swift arrest of the suspect following the formal registration of the case under animal protection laws. Bahar stated that police operations were launched immediately, resulting in Swapan being taken into custody. Legal proceedings are currently underway to produce the accused before the court to face formal charges.
