Police in Chandpur have arrested Hannan Mia, a Youth League leader and one of the accused in a case over an attack on former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s motorcade in the capital’s Banglamotor area in 2015.
Hannan was arrested during an operation in the Tarpurchandi Union area of Chandpur Sadar upazila in the early hours of Monday, 3 August, according to police.
The arrested man is the son of Mofiz Majhi of Tarpurchandi. He is identified as the president of Unit No. 2 of the Youth League in a Tejgaon ward.
Police said the case relating to the attack was filed nearly a decade after the incident. On 23 November 2024, a man named Fazlul Karim filed the case, naming more than 200 people as accused, including the then Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader. Hannan Mia was listed as accused No. 178 in the case.
The attack on Khaleda Zia’s motorcade in Banglamotor in 2015 had been a politically significant incident. The case filed years later has since brought several individuals into the focus of law enforcement. The allegations against each accused, however, remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.
Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Foyez Ahmed said police acted on information received from a confidential source and launched an operation in the Tarpurchandi Union area. A team led by Sub-Inspector Gazi Kamal carried out the operation and arrested Hannan Mia.
According to the officer, Hannan had already secured bail in the case concerning the attack on Khaleda Zia’s motorcade. However, police showed him arrested in connection with another case involving allegations of sabotage.
Following the arrest, Hannan was produced before a Chandpur court on Monday afternoon as part of the legal process.
Police said further action would be taken in accordance with the relevant court orders and legal procedures. Authorities are also expected to review the details of the cases pending against him as the proceedings continue.
The arrest comes amid renewed legal action in a number of politically sensitive cases involving allegations of violence and sabotage. While police have taken Hannan into custody in connection with the separate sabotage case, the allegations made in the motorcade attack case will ultimately have to be established through the legal process.
