Although the slight decrease in vegetable prices brought some relief to the market, the sudden 50% increase in onion prices has raised new concerns. Currently, onions are being sold at BDT 110–120 per kilogram.
In retail markets across the capital, prices of other vegetables have fallen—beans have dropped from BDT 200–220 to BDT 60–80 per kilogram, while aubergine, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, and other vegetables have also become cheaper. However, the abnormal rise in onion prices has dampened consumer optimism.
Market analysts claim that despite no major supply shortage, syndicates are artificially creating a scarcity to inflate prices. Authorities are urged to strengthen market supervision to protect consumers. Reduced domestic supply and delayed imports have been cited as key factors behind the price surge.
