Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan created a fresh political buzz on Thursday (27 November) as he addressed journalists at the Secretariat and clarified his stance on his potential participation in the upcoming national election. His remarks not only hinted at a major turn in his political trajectory but also opened the door to widespread speculation across political circles.
Speaking openly, Asif Mahmud stated that from a principled standpoint, anyone intending to participate in an election should resign from government responsibilities before entering electoral activities. “I believe it is necessary to resign from the advisory position before stepping into the election process. I am preparing myself in that direction,” he said, signaling a strong commitment to ethical political conduct.
One of the first questions posed by reporters was regarding the constituency he plans to contest. In response, Asif kept the suspense alive: “I have already announced that I will participate in the election. But I have not announced from where. I will share that once the time is right.”
His statement has sparked new speculations, with many political observers suggesting that several prominent constituencies—both in the capital and outside—may be under his consideration. Analysts believe that his cautious approach reflects a strategic evaluation of political dynamics and voting tendencies.
Addressing the broader issue of government officials running for office, Asif Mahmud made an important clarification. He explained that although no law or regulation prevents members of an interim government or its advisers from contesting elections, ethical concerns remain. “There is no legal barrier. But staying in a government position while engaging in election activities creates a conflict of interest. That is why I think anyone who enters the election should resign beforehand. I am preparing accordingly,” he emphasized.
He also added that discussions at the higher levels of government will determine the final steps regarding his resignation and future announcements.
Asked what party he intends to represent, Asif Mahmud remained guarded: “This is not the right time to comment on political matters.” His brief response has only deepened the mystery surrounding his political affiliation. Some in political circles believe he has been approached by more than one major party, while others speculate that he may be considering forming or joining a new political platform.
Observers note that Asif’s statements indicate that he is attempting to build a reputation as a responsible and ethical political actor—something that may work in his favor among voters who are seeking more transparency and accountability in public leadership.
His remarks have already become a topic of discussion among analysts, party insiders, and voters alike. They signal that an important political chapter may be unfolding, with Asif Mahmud expected to step into a more active political role very soon.
For now, however, the nation waits for answers to the big questions: Which constituency will he choose? Which party—if any—will he join? And when exactly will he resign from his advisory role? What remains certain is that his decisions in the coming weeks will significantly shape the political conversation.
