Over Twelve Mounds of Illegal Shaplapata Fish Seized from Dhaka–Baufal Passenger Bus

In a significant wildlife enforcement operation, authorities seized five illegal Shaplapata fish from a passenger bus travelling from Dhaka to Baufal and Dashmina. The confiscated catch weighed a total of 498 kilograms, equivalent to approximately twelve and a half mounds, highlighting the scale of the smuggling attempt.

The seizure occurred at around 12 noon on Sunday, 30 November, during a special operation conducted in front of the Baufal police station. Officials acting on intelligence information intercepted the bus and uncovered the illegally transported fish.

Under the Wildlife Conservation and Security Act 2012, the catching, killing, transporting, or selling of Shaplapata fish is strictly prohibited due to the species’ protected status. Despite these legal safeguards, the fish had been illegally transported from Dhaka to Baufal, demonstrating ongoing challenges in preventing wildlife trafficking.

Baufal Forest Department officer Badiuzzaman Sohag explained that authorities acted on confidential information regarding the bus, operated by Antra Transport, which was suspected of carrying Shaplapata fish. A raid was promptly conducted, resulting in the seizure of the fish. Legal proceedings are now underway to hold those responsible accountable.

The incident underscores the urgent need for vigilance and enforcement to protect endangered species. Smuggling of Shaplapata fish not only threatens biodiversity but also undermines environmental conservation efforts in the region. Authorities have reiterated the importance of public awareness regarding the legal protections afforded to endangered wildlife.
