The government has announced an increase of 2 Taka per litre in fuel prices for December, effective from Monday, following a notification issued on Sunday night by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Under the revised rates, diesel now costs 104 Taka per litre, kerosene 116 Taka, petrol 120 Taka, and octane 124 Taka. Bangladesh has followed an automatic fuel pricing system since March last year, which adjusts domestic fuel rates in line with international market trends.
The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) reports that the country’s annual fuel demand is approximately 7.5 million tonnes. Of this, around 75% is diesel, primarily used for agricultural irrigation, transportation, and power generation, while the remaining 25% is consumed as petrol, octane, kerosene, and other fuels.
BPC officials note that the corporation’s overall profit and loss largely depend on diesel sales, it is one of that , as fluctuations in international prices directly affect diesel-related revenue. In contrast, petrol and octane sales consistently generate profit due to stable domestic pricing and demand.
| Fuel Type | Previous Price (Taka/Litre) | New Price (Taka/Litre) | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diesel | 102 | 104 | 2 |
| Kerosene | 114 | 116 | 2 |
| Petrol | 118 | 120 | 2 |
| Octane | 122 | 124 | 2 |
The automatic pricing system allows fuel prices in Bangladesh to rise or fall in accordance with global oil market trends, ensuring that domestic prices reflect international fluctuations. Officials emphasised that such adjustments are essential to maintaining a balance between consumer affordability and the financial sustainability of the petroleum sector.
Consumers are advised to anticipate slightly higher transportation and utility costs due to the price revision, particularly in sectors heavily dependent on diesel, including agriculture and logistics.
