Freezing Weather Brings Kurigram Life to a Standstill

Kurigram is grappling with severe winter conditions as cold temperatures and dense fog bring daily life to a near standstill. Northern winds have intensified the chill, making this winter unusually harsh for residents of the northern district.

Over the past three days, temperatures have hovered between 12 and 13 degrees Celsius. Overnight and early morning fog blankets the district, causing reduced visibility and disruptions in transportation and routine activities.

Labourers, farmers, and low-income communities are particularly vulnerable to the harsh weather. The riverine char areas, which are home to some of the poorest sections of society, are bearing the brunt of the severe cold. Hospitals in the district have reported a noticeable increase in patients suffering from cold-related illnesses, including respiratory infections and hypothermia cases.

Subal Chandra, Officer-in-Charge at the Rajarhat Meteorological Centre, confirmed that at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, 3 December, the lowest temperature recorded in Kurigram was 12.3 degrees Celsius. He noted that the cold is expected to persist over the coming days, with fog continuing to affect daily life and transport services.

In response to the situation, the District Relief and Disaster Rehabilitation Office has allocated 5.4 million taka to distribute winter clothing and blankets across all nine upazilas. The initiative aims to provide relief to the most vulnerable populations, especially those living in the char areas. Local authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions, including limiting exposure to cold, wearing adequate clothing, and seeking medical attention if necessary.

Community members have expressed concern over the impact of the harsh winter on children, the elderly, and daily wage earners, many of whom are struggling to maintain warmth in poorly insulated homes. Relief organisations and local volunteers have been mobilised to support the distribution of winter aid and to raise awareness about health risks associated with prolonged exposure to cold.
