Dhaka, Bangladesh: In the wake of a recent high-profile crime involving a domestic worker, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali has urged residents to verify the identity of household employees before hiring them. The appeal was issued in an official DMP statement on Tuesday night, emphasising the importance of preventive measures to ensure household safety.
The Commissioner advised that, prior to employing domestic help, residents should obtain and record key identity documents. These include a valid national identity card, a recent passport-sized photograph, and the names and addresses of at least two reliable witnesses who can vouch for the worker’s background.
“For the security of your household and family members, it is essential to verify the personal and professional credentials of domestic staff,” the DMP statement said.
Residents were also encouraged to complete tenant registration forms diligently and cooperate with the police in documenting relevant information, which could aid in criminal investigations if required.
The alert follows a shocking double murder in Mohammadpur on Monday, allegedly committed by a domestic worker, highlighting the potential risks associated with unverified employees. According to the statement, incidents of domestic workers misappropriating valuables or fleeing with household items are not uncommon, underscoring the need for vigilance.
