Kolkata’s beloved and soul-stirring singer, Nachiketa Chakraborty, was admitted to a private hospital in the city following a sudden episode of chest pain, sparking widespread concern among his fans and the public. Demonstrating her personal concern, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the hospital on Monday, 6 December, immediately after returning from an official trip to Cooch Behar, to enquire about the singer’s health and wellbeing.
According to hospital sources, initial medical examinations revealed a blockage in Mr Chakraborty’s heart. On Saturday, 6 December, he underwent an urgent surgical procedure during which two stents were successfully inserted into his coronary arteries. Doctors have since confirmed that his condition is stable, and he is under careful, continuous observation. The medical team has reported gradual improvement in his physical condition.
During her visit, Chief Minister Banerjee personally met with the attending doctors to obtain a comprehensive update and spent time with the singer, reflecting their long-standing friendship and close personal bond. Just a few months ago, during the Durga Puja celebrations, she had advised Mr Chakraborty to take better care of his health. Upon learning of the surgery, she acted promptly, underscoring her continued concern for his wellbeing.
Nachiketa Chakraborty has been a towering figure in Bengali music for decades, enchanting audiences with soul-stirring, life-affirming songs such as Neelanjana, Anirban, Doctor, and Briddhashram. As he has aged, his physical resilience has naturally diminished, a development the Chief Minister has long kept in mind. His demanding concert schedule during the winter months, combined with limited rest, appears to have contributed to the recent health scare. Routine health screenings at a diagnostic centre in Park Circus initially revealed potential issues, which prompted further tests that confirmed the cardiac blockage, leading to his urgent hospital admission and successful intervention.
Hospital authorities have reiterated that Mr Chakraborty remains stable and is under meticulous medical supervision. Fans, admirers, and well-wishers across the state and beyond have flooded social media with messages of support, hoping for his swift and full recovery.
