Easy Method to Recharge Metro Cards via bKash

In the bustling metropolis of Dhaka, the Metro Rail has emerged as a symbol of efficiency and speed, offering commuters a reliable means to navigate the city. Regular passengers typically rely on permanent cards—commonly known as Rapid Pass or MRT Pass cards—to make their journeys seamless. Until recently, recharging these cards required visiting designated counters at metro stations, often involving long queues and considerable waiting time. For many, the combination of crowded stations and tight schedules made this process laborious and inconvenient.

However, those days are now a thing of the past. Embracing the digital age, the Dhaka Metro Rail authorities have introduced an online recharge facility for permanent card holders. Since 25 November, commuters can effortlessly top up their cards using a variety of online payment methods, including credit cards, bKash, Nagad, Rocket, and other internet banking platforms.

Recharging via the bKash app is straightforward. Users first select the ‘Metro Rail’ option from the app’s suggestions. This action automatically redirects the mobile browser to www.rapidpass.com.bd. New users must click on the ‘Register’ option and provide the necessary personal details. Registration is completed through OTP verification, ensuring security. Once registered, users can subsequently log in simply with their mobile number or email address and password.

To recharge, the commuter selects their Rapid Pass or MRT Pass card, enters the desired amount, and chooses the ‘Pay with bKash’ option. By entering the bKash number and verification code, the transaction is completed, with an SMS confirmation sent to the mobile device. Online recharges permit a minimum of 100 BDT and a maximum of 5,000 BDT per transaction. Additionally, bKash users may receive a cashback of up to 100 BDT.

The Metro Rail authorities emphasise that the same facility is available through Nagad, Rocket, credit cards, and other online banking services. Recharges remain in a pending state until the card is tapped at a station. Only one pending recharge can exist at a time. Cards that are blacklisted, refunded, or otherwise invalid cannot be recharged.

Users wishing to cancel a pending recharge may request cancellation within seven days before the card is tapped, although a 5% service charge will be deducted. Currently, however, refund services are temporarily suspended.

This initiative represents a significant leap towards a cashless, convenient, and time-efficient commuting experience for Dhaka’s Metro Rail passengers, reflecting the city’s steady embrace of digital innovation.
