Avalanche in Greece kills four tourists

Tragedy struck in Greece’s mountainous region of Phocis on Christmas Day, as an avalanche claimed the lives of four tourists hiking in the Vardousia mountain range.

The bodies were recovered on Friday following an extensive search and rescue operation that spanned several hours. According to Greece’s state media, the tourists had set out for a hike towards the Korakas peak of Vardousia. Concern arose when they failed to return within the expected time frame, prompting relatives to alert the authorities.

A coordinated rescue mission was launched, involving the fire service, specialised mountain rescue teams, and volunteer personnel. The operation faced significant challenges due to harsh weather conditions, including freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall, and the rugged mountainous terrain. Ultimately, the victims were located using drones, thermal imaging equipment, and specially trained search dogs, buried beneath a deep layer of snow.

According to rescue officials, the bodies were found close to one another, suggesting that a sudden and powerful avalanche struck while the group was together, leaving them no chance to seek shelter or safety. The deceased comprised three men and one woman.

Among the victims was a 55-year-old man from Eleia, Peloponnese, recognised as an experienced mountaineer with extensive climbing experience across Greece. Another was employed as a computer technician, while the woman was a 31-year-old teacher from Trikala.

Experts have warned that even minor vibrations in such mountainous conditions can trigger significant avalanche risks, highlighting the extreme hazards faced by hikers during the winter season.

Following the incident, Greek authorities issued warnings for all travel in the mountainous regions and urged individuals to avoid trekking without experienced guides. They also emphasised the importance of using appropriate safety equipment and monitoring weather forecasts when hiking or climbing during winter.
