Certain Forces Are Working from Behind to Destabilise the Nation, Says Mirza Fakhrul

Bangladesh is currently passing through a critical and delicate phase, warned Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, as he cautioned against what he described as covert efforts to plunge the country into instability. He said a wave of confusing narratives, political agitation and misinformation was spreading across the nation, giving rise to concerns that “a handful of people are working from behind the scenes to destabilise the country”.

Mirza Fakhrul made these remarks on Sunday afternoon while addressing a discussion meeting with local Islamic scholars and clerics at the training centre of the non-governmental organisation Manab Kalyan Parishad in Thakurgaon town. The meeting was organised as part of BNP’s outreach to religious leaders ahead of the upcoming national election.

“We must ensure that we do not slide back into darkness,” Mirza Fakhrul said. “If we allow divisions and disunity to grow among ourselves, we will fall into the hands of conspirators. That would once again cause immense harm to the country.” He stressed that there were deliberate attempts to disrupt and sabotage the forthcoming election, and urged citizens to remain vigilant so that such efforts do not succeed.

Addressing a widely circulated allegation, the BNP Secretary General firmly rejected claims that his party opposed governance based on the Qur’an and Sunnah. “Some people are spreading the falsehood that we do not believe in the Qur’an and Sunnah—God forbid,” he said. “We are fully committed to these principles. We will never allow any law in this country that contradicts the Qur’an and Sunnah. This has always been our pledge.”

Highlighting the significance of the upcoming general election, Mirza Fakhrul told the audience that the vote would determine who governs Bangladesh for the next five years. “This election is crucial,” he said. “Over the past 15 years, state institutions, democratic systems and the economy were systematically destroyed.” He accused the ruling Awami League of plundering banks, facilitating money laundering abroad, and enriching a select few at the expense of the wider population.

The BNP leader further alleged that political repression intensified as the ruling party sought to entrench itself in power. “Political opponents were persecuted, religious scholars were arrested and tortured, and some were even executed,” he claimed. “At that time, none of you felt safe. You lived in constant fear of being branded extremists.”

Mirza Fakhrul concluded by asserting that BNP had consistently played a leading role in preserving the nation’s religious values, culture and traditions. “Islam is a religion of peace,” he said. “We seek peace, and we want peace to be established through a credible and participatory election.”

The meeting was attended by Thakurgaon district BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Poygam Ali, local Islamic scholars, religious figures and party activists.
