Archer secures place in provisional T20 World Cup squad

England have named Jofra Archer in their provisional 15-man squad for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with selectors also including fast bowler Josh Tongue. The tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, is scheduled to take place in February and March, and the announcement coincides with the naming of England’s T20I and ODI squads for their upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka next month.

While Archer has been included in the World Cup squad, he will not travel to Sri Lanka as he continues his rehabilitation with the England medical team. The 30-year-old sustained a left-side strain during the third Ashes Test in Adelaide earlier this month. Tongue, meanwhile, receives his maiden T20I call-up and will travel to Sri Lanka, marking a major milestone in his burgeoning international career. Brydon Carse features in the T20I touring squad but is not part of the provisional World Cup squad.

England have retained eight players from their 2024 T20 World Cup squad, including new captain Harry Brook and former skipper Jos Buttler. The others carried over are Phil Salt, Ben Duckett, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Adil Rashid, and Archer. Notable absentees from the 2024 squad include Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Tom Hartley, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Reece Topley, and Mark Wood. New inclusions are Rehan Ahmed, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Liam Dawson, Jamie Overton, Tongue, and Luke Wood.

The ODI squad sees the return of opener Zak Crawley, back in the 50-over format for the first time since December 2023, while Will Jacks rejoins both white-ball squads after missing the tour of New Zealand in October.
