A suspected narcotics trafficking attempt was abruptly exposed in Meherpur after a microbus lost control in the early hours of the morning and crashed into a residential house near the border area, injuring a homeowner and leading to the recovery of a significant quantity of cannabis.
The incident took place around 5:00 am on Wednesday in the Tergoria village of Meherpur Sadar upazila. According to eyewitness accounts, a fast-moving microbus veered off the roadway and struck the home of Arshad Ali while the household was still asleep. The impact was severe enough to bring down part of the structure’s outer wall, causing injuries to the homeowner.
Moments after the collision, the vehicle overturned on the roadside. Locals rushed to the scene and soon discovered suspicious bundles inside the wreckage. Upon closer inspection, they identified approximately 1.5 kilograms of cannabis hidden within the microbus.
The driver, identified as Anik Hossain Biplob, was apprehended by local residents before being handed over to law enforcement officials who arrived shortly after the incident was reported. Police later confirmed the seizure of both the vehicle and the narcotics.
Arshad Ali, the injured homeowner, received immediate first aid from nearby residents. His condition was later described as stable, though he sustained injuries due to the structural collapse caused by the crash.
Preliminary police findings suggest that the cannabis may have been transported from a border region, with the vehicle allegedly en route to deliver the drugs to an inland destination. Authorities suspect the operation may be linked to a broader smuggling network active in the border belt.
