Early Life and Education
Akhtaruzzaman Muhammad Ilyas was born on 12 February 1943 in Gotia village, Gaibandha, although his ancestral roots were in Chelopara, Bogura District. His father, Badiuzzaman Muhammad Ilyas, was a member of the East Bengal Provincial Council and Parliamentary Secretary of the Muslim League. Growing up in a politically and historically conscious household profoundly shaped Ilyas’s intellectual and literary sensibilities.

Ilyas demonstrated exceptional academic brilliance throughout his studies. He completed his matriculation from Bogura Zilla School in 1958, followed by an Intermediate of Arts (IA) from Dhaka College in 1960. He earned his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 1963 and Master’s degree in 1964 from Dhaka University.

Career
Following his studies, Ilyas began his professional journey as a lecturer at Jagannath College, Dhaka, where he taught until 1983. He later served in various educational and administrative roles, including Deputy Director of the Directorate of Primary Education, Vice-Principal of the College of Music, Specialist at the Mofizuddin Education Commission, and Professor and Head of Department at Dhaka College.

Literary Contributions and Recognition
Ilyas’s literary outlook was progressive, humanitarian, and deeply sympathetic to political movements. He became especially renowned for portraying social tensions, power dynamics, historical insight, and personal crises in an artistically compelling style. His works have earned recognition both in India and abroad.

He was awarded the prestigious Bangla Academy Award in 1982 for his literary achievements. His works have been translated into multiple Indian and foreign languages. Chilekothar Sepai has been included in the comparative Bengali literature syllabus at Jadavpur University, further cementing its international stature.

Personal Life and Legacy
Ilyas led a largely private life. His only son, Andalib Ilyas Partha, currently serves as Bangladesh’s Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata.

This towering figure of Bengali fiction passed away on 4 January 1997 in Dhaka. Posthumously, he was honoured with the Ekushey Padak, recognising his monumental contributions to literature.
