Asaduddin Owaisi, the chief of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Member of Parliament, has issued a forceful challenge to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) regarding the contentious issue of ‘Love Jihad’.
Speaking at a press conference in Amravati, Maharashtra, Owaisi demanded transparency from the central government, stating: “Under the rule of the BJP-led central government over the past 11 years, the official statistics on how many cases of ‘Love Jihad’ have been registered must be made public. Moreover, the legal definition of this term should be clarified before the citizens.”
Owaisi argued that while the BJP has repeatedly invoked the term in various states to gain political advantage, there exists no precise legal basis for it. He criticised the use of such divisive rhetoric, warning that it undermines the rule of law and distracts attention from pressing national issues.
The remarks came in response to recent statements by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. At an event in Bhopal, Bhagwat suggested that incidents akin to ‘Love Jihad’ occur when families fail to educate children about religion and culture. Reacting to this, Owaisi asserted that “every adult citizen in India has the constitutional right to choose their life partner. No ideology or organisation has the authority to interfere in personal choices or relationships.”
Owaisi also accused the BJP and RSS of deliberately highlighting polarising issues like ‘Love Jihad’ to divert public attention from critical matters such as unemployment, border tensions with China in Ladakh, and other socio-economic challenges. He emphasised that protecting citizens’ constitutional rights and addressing genuine national concerns should take precedence over sensationalist campaigns.
Key Points of Owaisi’s Statement:
| Issue Highlighted | Owaisi’s Position |
|---|---|
| Government data on ‘Love Jihad’ cases | Must be publicly disclosed |
| Legal definition of ‘Love Jihad’ | No clear legal framework exists |
| BJP-RSS political motive | Using issue for electoral gain |
| Individual rights | Every adult has freedom to choose a partner |
| National priorities | Focus should be on unemployment, border security, and socio-economic issues |
By framing the debate around legal clarity, personal freedoms, and national priorities, Owaisi sought to shift public discourse from polarising narratives towards constitutional rights and pressing governance challenges. His statement reflects AIMIM’s continued advocacy for minority rights while calling out what he perceives as politically motivated distractions.
