At least 14 people have tragically lost their lives following sudden and severe flooding on the island of Siau, located in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The torrential downpours began in the early hours of Monday, 5 January, and have left communities reeling.
Local authorities reported that four individuals remain missing. A specialised 16-member rescue team has been deployed to locate them, working tirelessly amidst challenging conditions.
Nuriadin Gumeleng, spokesperson for the local search and rescue agency, stated that 18 people have sustained serious injuries in the disaster. The main roads in the affected areas are blocked with rocks, fallen trees, and thick mud, significantly hampering rescue operations. Several heavy excavators have been mobilised to clear debris and restore access to isolated communities.
According to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), at least 444 residents who lost their homes in the flooding have been evacuated and temporarily sheltered in local schools and churches.
North Sulawesi Governor Julius Selvanus confirmed that hundreds of houses, along with several government buildings, have been either partially or completely destroyed.
The Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has issued warnings that heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next few days. Flooding risks remain high not only in Sulawesi but also across Java, Maluku, and Papua islands.
Environmental experts have highlighted that recent deforestation and mining activities have exacerbated the impact of natural disasters in Indonesia. They warn that the destruction of forested areas has intensified the frequency and severity of floods and landslides.
This latest catastrophe follows a deadly series of events last November, when floods and landslides in Sumatra, triggered by post-cyclone rains, claimed the lives of over a thousand people. January and February are traditionally the peak rainy season in the region, raising concerns about further disasters.
