Armed Suspect Held at Trump Event

A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an alleged armed attack targeting a dinner event attended by former US President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the suspect, Cole Thomas Allen, a schoolteacher from Torrance, California, had allegedly planned the incident in advance.

According to investigators, Allen booked a room at a Hilton hotel under the guise of being a guest and remained on the premises prior to the event. On Saturday evening, he reportedly attempted to breach security and gain access to the restricted venue. Security personnel intervened swiftly, apprehending him before he could reach the main hall. Authorities recovered a shotgun, a handgun, and several bladed weapons from his possession.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported hearing multiple gunshots during the incident. One police officer sustained injuries but survived due to wearing a bulletproof vest. Security forces subdued the suspect promptly, forcing him to the ground and placing him in handcuffs to prevent further escalation.

At the time of the incident, Trump was preparing to take the stage. Upon hearing gunfire, his security detail acted immediately, escorting him to a secure location. Although he reportedly stumbled while being moved, he was unharmed. Other high-ranking attendees were also evacuated safely.

Federal prosecutor Jeanine Pirro stated that Allen faces two charges related to the use of firearms in violent crime, along with an additional charge of assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. She indicated that further charges may be added as the investigation progresses. The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed that forensic and ballistic experts have collected a long firearm and multiple shell casings from the scene. The agency is also gathering testimonies from witnesses while coordinating closely with the US Secret Service to conduct a comprehensive inquiry.

Preliminary information regarding Allen’s political affiliations suggests that he was not formally aligned with any party at the time of voter registration. However, records from the Federal Election Commission indicate that he donated $25 in October 2024 via a political fundraising platform supporting the campaign of Kamala Harris.

Academically, Allen graduated in 2017 with a degree in mechanical engineering from California Institute of Technology and later completed a postgraduate qualification in computer science.

Neighbours described Allen and his family as recent arrivals in the area, noting that they appeared quiet and sociable. No prior signs of suspicious behaviour had reportedly been observed.
