Dinajpur, Bangladesh – The lifeless body of a college student, Mostarina Akter, was discovered hanging in her hostel on Tuesday, 6 December. The grim discovery was made around midday at the Linka Girls’ Hostel, located near Balubari, adjacent to Dinajpur Government Women’s College.
Mostarina, a third-year honours student in the Bengali Department at Dinajpur Government Women’s College, hailed from Elubari village in Fulbari Upazila, Dinajpur. Her untimely death has left her family, friends, and the college community in shock.
According to Md. Abdul Halim, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) in Dinajpur, the authorities were alerted to the incident shortly after it occurred. “Upon arrival at the scene, we found the student hanging in her room. It appears she took her own life using her own scarf. The body was subsequently recovered and secured,” he confirmed.
The police have sent Mostarina’s body to Dinajpur Medical College mortuary for a post-mortem examination. “The exact cause of death will only be determined once the autopsy report is received,” added ASP Halim.
Friends and classmates described Mostarina as a bright and diligent student. “She was always dedicated to her studies and active in college events. It is unimaginable that she would take such a step,” one fellow student said, requesting anonymity.
The incident has raised concerns about the mental health and well-being of students residing in hostels. Educational institutions and local authorities have been urged to provide adequate support systems and counselling services to prevent such tragedies.
