Woman Found Dead in Kuakata Flat

Police in the coastal resort town of Kuakata, in Bangladesh’s Patuakhali district, have recovered the body of a young housewife from a rented residence, triggering shock and concern among local residents. The deceased, identified as Arifa Akter, was found with a fatal throat injury late on Monday night, prompting police to detain her husband for questioning as investigations continue.

According to police sources, the body was discovered at around 11:30 pm in a rented house owned by Abdus Sattar, located in Ward No. 3 of Kuakata Municipality. Neighbours reported hearing loud crying and commotion from the house late at night. Alarmed by the unusual noise, several locals approached the residence and found Arifa lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Her husband, Rifat Hawladar, was reportedly sitting nearby, visibly distressed and crying.

Police were informed immediately, and officers from Mahipur Police Station arrived at the scene shortly afterwards. The body was recovered and sent on Tuesday morning to the morgue of Patuakhali Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause and timing of death.

Arifa Akter was originally from the Barogati area of Tarki Bandar in Gournadi upazila, Barishal district. She was the daughter of Khalek Hawladar. Her husband, Rifat, is the son of the late Anwar Hossain Hawladar, also from the same locality. Local residents and police officials said the couple had moved to Kuakata approximately four months ago, leaving their home area to start a new life together.

Their marriage was reportedly the result of a romantic relationship, and as a result, they maintained limited contact with their respective families. Rifat was employed at a local restaurant in Kuakata, while Arifa managed household responsibilities. However, neighbours stated that the couple were often heard arguing, suggesting ongoing domestic discord.

Mahipur Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Mohabbat Khan, said that Rifat was taken into police custody after his statements were found to be inconsistent during preliminary questioning. “His behaviour and responses raised suspicion. For the sake of a proper investigation, he has been detained,” the officer said, adding that legal proceedings would continue based on the findings of the post-mortem report.

Police have not yet confirmed whether the death was a case of homicide or resulted from other circumstances, but they stressed that all possibilities are being examined carefully. Investigators are also gathering statements from neighbours and reviewing the couple’s recent activities to establish a clearer timeline of events.
