The ongoing nationwide measles outbreak continues to take a heavy toll on public health across Bangladesh. According to the latest official figures released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), five more fatalities were recorded over a single twenty-four-hour period, spanning from Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning.
The recent casualties include four individuals who succumbed while exhibiting typical symptoms of the viral illness, alongside one confirmed case of measles mortality. These latest deaths push the cumulative death toll to 885 since the outbreak intensified earlier this year on 15 March. A detailed breakdown of the total fatalities reveals that 786 people have died from measles-related symptoms, while 99 deaths have been officially confirmed as laboratory-verified measles cases.
Health authorities reported a continuous influx of new patients during the monitored twenty-four-hour timeframe. Medical facilities registered 941 fresh cases presenting with measles symptoms, alongside 84 newly confirmed laboratory diagnoses. This brings the staggering cumulative totals since 15 March to 139,125 reported measles cases nationwide, with 17,469 of those officially verified as confirmed cases.
Despite the high volume of infections, public health infrastructure continues managing patient admissions and recoveries. Since the mid-March surge began, a total of 121,013 patients have required hospitalisation due to severe measles symptoms. On a positive note, recovery rates remain steady; a total of 116,827 patients have successfully recovered and received formal discharge clearances from hospitals across the country after completing their medical treatments. Medical professionals continue urging communities to seek timely care and ensure immunisation protocols are followed to contain the spreading viral threat.
