Thalapathy Vijay summoned by the CBI

The celebrated South Indian actor and politician, widely known as Thalapathy Vijay, is facing a testing period as legal scrutiny intensifies over a tragic incident at a political rally. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has formally summoned him to appear at its office on Monday, 12 January, in connection with the incident.

The tragedy occurred during the inaugural large-scale assembly of Vijay’s political party, the Tamilaga Vetrikazagam (TVK), held on 27 September in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The event drew massive crowds, eager to catch a glimpse of the popular actor. However, organisers and law enforcement struggled to manage the overwhelming turnout, which ultimately led to a catastrophic stampede.

The disaster claimed the lives of 41 individuals, including women and children, while over 100 people sustained serious injuries. The magnitude of the tragedy immediately sparked questions regarding the rally’s security arrangements and organisational preparedness.

In response, India’s Supreme Court took swift action in October, expressing concern over apparent lapses in safety measures. A bench comprising Justices J.K. Maheshwari and N.V. Anjaria entrusted the investigation to the CBI. To ensure transparency and accountability, a three-member high-level committee was established under the leadership of retired Justice Ajay Rastogi, which includes two senior and experienced IPS officers.

The focus of the investigation is to determine the nature of organisational shortcomings during the rally and the extent of responsibility borne by Vijay’s party as hosts of the event. For Thalapathy Vijay, who recently entered the political arena, this legal complication marks a significant challenge at the very start of his political journey.

The actor will be required to present his statement and clarify his position before the central investigative agency on Monday, as authorities seek to ascertain whether negligence on the part of the organisers contributed to the tragic outcome.
