Gopalganj police have arrested Mujibur Rahman Sikdar, the chief campaign coordinator for independent candidate Kamruzzaman Bhuiya, contesting the Gopalganj-2 constituency, which covers Sadar and part of Kashiani. The arrest took place on Tuesday at approximately 11:00 am near the Post Office junction in Gopalganj town.
Authorities reported that Mujibur Rahman Sikdar, a resident of Chandradighalia village in Sadar Upazila, is named in an ongoing criminal case involving the vandalism of an army vehicle, arson on another vehicle, and the seizure of firearms. The police confirmed that his arrest followed proper legal procedures in accordance with the charges listed in the case’s First Information Report (FIR).
Mujibur Rahman’s family, however, has alleged that his active role in the election campaign prompted political opponents to influence the authorities into detaining him. Speaking to reporters, his younger son, Shaon Sikdar, said, “Yesterday evening, there was a courtyard meeting at our home regarding the independent candidate Kamruzzaman Bhuiya’s election campaign, led by my father. Today at 11:00 am, police arrested him in Gopalganj town and sent him to jail. If my father is genuinely implicated in this case, why wasn’t he arrested earlier? He has been living in the village all this time. We believe political figures from another party have orchestrated his arrest.”
Kamruzzaman Bhuiya himself also raised concerns about the timing of the arrest. “Mujibur Rahman was actively leading my election campaign when he was taken into custody. This clearly indicates political motives,” Bhuiya stated. He added that the FIR lists several individuals named Mujibur Sikdar from Chandradighalia village—at least five in total—and insisted that the correct individual should have been verified before the arrest.
Gopalganj Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge, Mohammad Anisur Rahman, told reporters, “Mujibur Rahman Sikdar was arrested as an accused listed in the FIR, and the action followed due legal procedures.”
