Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone has publicly apologised for his conduct on the sidelines during the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Real Madrid in Saudi Arabia, where his team suffered a 2-1 defeat. The Argentine manager expressed regret for mocking Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior during the high-tension encounter.
Simeone, renowned for his fiery temperament, was caught on camera repeatedly provoking the Brazilian forward. Reports indicate that he warned Vinícius about his future at the club, stating, “Florentino will get rid of you, remember what I am telling you.”
Ahead of Atlético’s Copa del Rey Round of 16 match against Deportivo La Coruña, Simeone addressed the incident during a press conference:
“I want to apologise to both Florentino Pérez and Vinícius for my behaviour. Involving myself in that situation was a mistake, and I acknowledge it. The team that won deserved to advance, and they did.”
When asked if his behaviour had crossed a line, Simeone clarified:
“I am asking for forgiveness, but I am not begging for it. There is nothing more to say.”
The intensity on the pitch escalated further during the second half when Vinícius was substituted. A section of the stadium erupted in chants, and the Brazilian forward, who had not scored in 19 consecutive matches prior to this game, was seen smiling and gesturing to Simeone while pointing to the crowd, saying, “Listen, listen!”
Real Madrid’s victory ensured their place in the final, where they faced arch-rivals Barcelona, ultimately losing 3-2. Notably, Vinícius scored a brilliant goal in the first half of the final. Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid remains fourth in La Liga, trailing league leaders Barcelona by 11 points.
