Barça overcame winter’s bite and kept hope alive

Barcelona overcame harsh conditions in Prague to secure a crucial 4-2 victory over Slavia Prague, keeping their hopes alive for the UEFA Europa League Round of 16. Played in biting -6°C weather—a stark contrast to Barcelona’s usual January temperatures of 13–15°C—the match tested the Catalan side both physically and mentally.

The visitors fell behind within ten minutes when Slavia capitalised on a corner. Thomas Holeš delivered a precise cross, and from close range, Vasil Kusei headed the ball into the net, leaving Barcelona on the back foot.

However, Fermin Lopez emerged as the hero for Barcelona, scoring twice to bring the team back into contention. His first goal came in the 34th minute with a powerful strike from close range, assisted by Jindrich Stanek’s post. Just eight minutes later, Lopez scored again with a curling shot, giving Barcelona a 2-1 lead before halftime.

Slavia Prague equalised just before the break when a right-sided corner deflected off Robert Lewandowski’s shoulder into his own net, restoring parity at 2-2.

The second half saw Barcelona dominate despite the absence of Lamine Yamal due to suspension. Their attacking momentum remained strong, and after one hour, Marcus Rashford and Dani Olmo entered the field. Three minutes after his introduction, Olmo scored from a long-range effort, sending the ball into the top corner. Later, with an assist from Rashford, Lewandowski converted a loose ball with a precise hooked shot, sealing Barcelona’s fourth goal.

Slavia Prague, with only three points from seven matches, are now mathematically eliminated from the tournament despite having one match remaining. Barcelona, five-time European champions, currently sit ninth in the group. They must defeat Copenhagen at home next Wednesday, combined with favourable results elsewhere, to secure a spot in the last eight.

Barcelona’s form remains strong on all fronts—they recently lifted the Spanish Super Cup, lead La Liga, and are competing in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals. Their ambition for four trophies this season is very much alive.
