Social media giant Meta has taken a significant step to bolster the safety of teenagers using artificial intelligence (AI) across its platforms. The company announced that interactions between teenagers and AI characters will be temporarily restricted until new, safer versions of these experiences are launched.
The move was reported on Saturday, 24 January, by Fox Business, which highlighted the company’s renewed focus on safeguarding underage users in response to growing concerns about AI content.
Meta explained that existing AI characters will be inaccessible to teenagers until updated, age-appropriate versions are rolled out. The restrictions apply not only to registered teenage users but also to those identified as underage through age verification technologies. This proactive approach is intended to prevent unintended exposure to inappropriate content.
In an updated blog post on its official website, Meta stated that the measure is part of the ongoing implementation of its 2025 Safety Preview initiative. This initiative had promised to provide parents with enhanced control tools to protect their children online.
Under the new guidelines, parents will be able to:
Completely block one-on-one interactions between their children and AI characters.
Restrict access to specific AI characters deemed unsuitable.
Monitor the general nature of their children’s interactions with AI chatbots or Meta AI assistants.
Meta noted that the announcement comes in the wake of multiple reports highlighting inappropriate or offensive behaviour by AI chatbots, which has renewed scrutiny over teenage engagement with AI technologies. Importantly, parents will have the flexibility to implement these controls without entirely cutting off AI access, allowing teenagers to still enjoy age-appropriate AI experiences under supervision.
The company further confirmed that the new AI characters designed for teenagers will adhere to PG-13 standards, ensuring that no adult or inappropriate content is accessible. This development reflects Meta’s commitment to creating a safer digital environment while maintaining engaging AI experiences for younger users.
Key Features of Meta’s Teen AI Restrictions:

Meta’s decision represents a significant move in the tech industry’s ongoing efforts to balance innovation with child safety, providing parents with tools to manage their children’s AI interactions responsibly.
