For more than a decade, the European Golden Shoe was virtually synonymous with two names. Between the 2007–08 and 2018–19 seasons, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dominated the award to such an extent that only once did neither appear on the winners’ list. That rare exception came in 2008–09, when Diego Forlán claimed the prize, while in 2013–14 Luis Suárez shared the honour with Ronaldo. Beyond those isolated moments, the era belonged firmly to Messi and Ronaldo.
That landscape has changed dramatically in recent seasons. Since 2022–23, the Golden Shoe race has evolved into a compelling three-way contest involving Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. Each of the trio has won the prestigious award once in the past three campaigns, signalling a clear shift in European football’s goal-scoring hierarchy. The current season has followed the same script, with Kane, Mbappé and Haaland once again setting the pace in their respective leagues—and doing so at remarkably similar rates.
Before assessing who currently holds the advantage, it is worth clarifying how the European Golden Shoe is determined. While every domestic league crowns its own top scorer with a “Golden Boot”, the European Golden Shoe is awarded to the player who accumulates the most points across all European leagues. Points are calculated by multiplying a player’s total league goals by a coefficient that reflects the strength of the league in which those goals are scored. Europe’s top five leagues—the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1—carry the highest coefficient, awarding two points per goal. Other leagues are assigned lower values, typically 1.5 or 1 point per goal.
In the Bundesliga, Harry Kane has enjoyed a prolific campaign with Bayern Munich. The England captain has scored 21 league goals, placing him comfortably clear at the top of the German scoring charts. His nearest challengers, Deniz Undav of Stuttgart and Bayern team-mate Michael Olise, are both stranded on 10 goals, highlighting the scale of Kane’s dominance.
La Liga tells a similar story. Kylian Mbappé, now spearheading Real Madrid’s attack, has also reached 21 goals, matching Kane’s tally and ensuring he remains firmly in contention for the Golden Shoe. Vedat Muriqi, with 14 goals, sits some distance behind in Spain.
Erling Haaland, meanwhile, trails the leading pair by a single goal. The Norwegian striker has netted 20 times in the Premier League, placing him top of England’s scoring list. His closest domestic rival, Brentford’s Brazilian forward Igor Thiago, has scored 16 goals. Notably, Thiago also occupies fourth place in the overall Golden Shoe standings.
Further down the list is Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis, who has scored 19 goals in the Portuguese league. Despite outscoring Thiago, Pavlidis ranks below him because goals in Portugal are worth only 1.5 points each, compared with two points in the Premier League.
An even starker example of the points system can be found in Latvia’s Virsliga. RFS striker Darko Lemajić has scored an impressive 28 goals this season, yet he sits only sixth in the Golden Shoe race. With each goal in Latvia worth just one point, his total of 28 points leaves him well adrift of Kane and Mbappé, who have amassed 42 points apiece from their 21 goals.
Matches played also add an intriguing dimension to the contest. Kane has featured in just 19 league matches so far, compared with 20 for Mbappé and 23 for Haaland, suggesting that the Bayern striker may yet have the greatest scope to extend his lead as the season progresses.

With months of football still to be played, the margins remain fine. Injuries, form and fixture congestion could yet tilt the balance. For now, however, the Golden Shoe race stands as a vivid symbol of a new era—one defined not by two icons, but by three extraordinary goal scorers pushing each other to the limit.
