A passenger aircraft crashed in northern Colombia on Wednesday, claiming the lives of all 15 people on board, including 13 passengers and two crew members. The accident occurred in a remote, mountainous region extremely close to the Venezuelan border.
The state-owned airline Satena confirmed the crash in a statement released on 28 January, describing the incident as a “fatal accident.” The aircraft involved was a Beechcraft 1900 twin-propeller plane, according to the airline.
Details about the cause of the crash remain scarce. However, Satena confirmed that the wreckage was located in a rugged, mountainous area, highlighting the challenging conditions faced by rescue teams.
The flight, designated NSE 8849, had departed from Cúcuta, a major city in Colombia’s Norte de Santander department, and was en route to the town of Ocaña near the Venezuelan border. The plane was scheduled to land at 12:05 pm local time but lost contact with air traffic control 11 minutes prior to the expected arrival.
Tragically, among the victims were prominent political figures, including legislator Diogenes Quintero Amaya and Carlos Salcedo, a candidate in the forthcoming congressional elections. The loss has sent shockwaves through the local community and the national political scene.
Following the crash, search and rescue operations were immediately launched in the mountainous terrain. A dedicated hotline has been established to provide information to the families of the passengers. Colombia’s armed forces are assisting in the recovery and investigation efforts.
The Cúcuta region is characterised by steep, often treacherous terrain and highly variable weather conditions, which complicate aviation operations. Parts of this region are known to be controlled by Colombia’s largest guerrilla group, the National Liberation Army (ELN), further challenging rescue and recovery operations.
