A serious road accident in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj has left at least 20 passengers injured after a speeding passenger bus lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. near Malek’s Bazar along the Gopalganj–Pirojpur regional highway. According to police and fire service officials, the bus—operated by a Dhaka-bound intercity service from Pirojpur—was reportedly travelling at high speed when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle. During the manoeuvre, the front tyre suddenly burst, causing the driver to lose control completely.
The vehicle veered off the road and fell into a deep roadside ditch, triggering panic among passengers on board. Many were injured as they were thrown against seats and internal structures due to the impact.
Local residents were among the first to respond, rushing to the scene and beginning rescue efforts before emergency services arrived. Shortly afterwards, personnel from the fire service and police reached the location and launched a coordinated rescue operation. Injured passengers were carefully extracted from the wreckage and transported to nearby medical facilities, including Gopalganj Sadar Hospital and Tungipara Upazila Health Complex.
Medical staff confirmed that several victims sustained serious injuries, though no fatalities have been reported so far. Doctors have kept the injured under close observation as treatment continues.
A senior official from the fire service stated that rescue operations were completed swiftly after receiving the alert, and all injured individuals were evacuated without delay. Authorities have also confirmed that no bodies were recovered from the scene.

Local residents expressed concern over the recurring accidents on this highway stretch, citing excessive speeding, risky overtaking, and inadequate traffic enforcement as persistent hazards. Mechanical failures in long-distance buses have also been identified as a contributing factor in several recent incidents.
Road safety experts emphasise the importance of strict vehicle fitness checks, adherence to speed regulations, and stronger monitoring of overtaking practices on regional highways. They also recommend that long-distance transport operators conduct thorough inspections of critical components such as tyres and braking systems before each journey.
Following the accident, traffic movement on the highway was temporarily disrupted but later returned to normal after the wreckage was cleared. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash and to assess whether regulatory violations contributed to the incident.
